Our world is a world of images. We are surrounded by them but we are also increasingly threatened by them. We are threatened by the distance between what they tell us is real and what is real; between what they ask us to be and what we are; between what they say is of value and what actually is of value.
None of this is yogic and nor sadly are many of the images from the world of yoga itself – particularly the commercial world of yoga.
stillpractising was founded on different principles. It aims to provide a visual representation of what it is really like for the vast majority of us to practise this ancient discipline - ordinary people experiencing the extraordinary beauty and power of what yoga does for our bodies, our minds and our spirits.
The cards, it is hoped, are therefore faithful reflections of our daily practice, the classes we go to, the bodies, homes and world we live in - and the divine spirit that we all feel and share.
To this end we have come up with a number of thematic series. In each one a particular aspect of our practice and experience of yoga is highlighted.
The My Mat series concentrates on our daily practice – the same person in the same room with, of course, the same mat. My Body tries to realize the intimate and sometimes unusual relationship with our bodies that the practice of yoga brings about. The cards in the My Home series are as original in concept as they are engagingly comfortable in their appeal. In My Class we recognize the most familiar of all our acquaintances with yoga – in the studio. My World shows some of the sites of prana that we either can or wish we could practise in. The last My yoga series is appropriately named My Spirit – it depicts words, phrases and gestures that contain the profoundest meanings of yoga and the ancient teachings from which it sprung.
A lovely departure from the above can be seen in the twelve photographic details of that most symbolic and beneficial of plants, the sacred lotus. Four leaves, four hearts and four flowers – complete with a small visitor or two – make up this sumptuous series.
stillpractising is a young company and like most healthy youngsters it is fast growing. Already it has a larger range than any of its competitors – and it has plans for a lot more yet. But it is also a very humble enterprise, and therefore despite the fact that practice is supposed to make perfect, stillpractising would prefer to remain just that - stillpractising.
Postscript: many people think we can draw, but can’t spell. The answer to this is simple. The British learn that it’s “s” for a verb and “c” for a noun. The Americans have it a lot easier as they don’t have to think at all – it’s always “c”. We follow the former’s conventions although we freely concede that the latter’s are far less confusing.
