I used to practice with mirror... i even dream to hv my own practising room with four sides of mirror.... in very zen style...hahaha
Then one day, my friend told me this...her yoga teacher told it is better not to practice with mirror as mirror distracts our focus, and also when we look at mirror..we just focus on our outer self...instead of inner self... reflecting what her yoga teacher said...i feel somewhat is true... for sometimes, i just love to see myself in the graceful posture in yoga.....,,
btw, now i still practice with a very small mirror in certain postures to see how my posture but most of the time i wl take out that mirror & just practice by myself...
hi happy fish, I can relate to your post. actually there are times when I feel like doing yoga poses in front of a mirror, it may sound vain but I just want to see how I look like when practicing yoga!
I don't practice yoga with a mirror. I agree with your friend's yoga instructor - a mirror distracts you and you cannot concentrate on your workout.
Remember wtih yoga, we are bringing harmony to our mind, body and spirits. Although it is important to ensure we are performing the postures correctly, we need to free our minds from all distractions. I think the mirror is a distraction.
thks for all ur reply, now i do with/without mirror...with mirror when i need to see my posture if is in proper align, no when i do the posture that i hv mastered.. another point i want to add with practising with mirror is abt the ego...like me last time, i feel great when i see myself in perfect posture when i look myself in mirror...which makes me feel happy & proud & that is my ego comes in... i don't know...since i heard from my friend, i not really practice in front of mirror just except few postures... which can really bring me more focus mind & peace...
Yes may be the mirror can be helpfull if you study the posture you want to do, but in yoga practice, it is another thing. As you want your body to be enligned with your vertebreas. Even if your eyes are moving slightely, or are not inligned with yours body, your equilibra will be disturbed and may be the shape of your muscles after a while.
Namaste everybody, I would like to share my view if you allow me. I was not here for a week that is the reason for late response. Well, I always practice with mirror during challenging postures to make them perfect. Otherwise I don't need a mirror to practice Yoga. I avoid mirror you can say............
I seldom practice in front of the mirror, these are the times when I feel like I'm havin a hard time performing a certain yoga pose. But doin it in front of the mirror is my last resort since I consult to my yoga teacher for him to check whether I'm doing things right.
I wander very much about... Where are you when you practice in front a mirror ? Where is your energy ? Where is your sens ? Do you still conect with your heart ? Is your energy is dispersed through the place, or is it still clearely inside you ? And what about are your madidate during yoga looking at you in a mirror ?
I really want to know about what you are concerned in yoga while looking at your image in a mirror ?

Hi, don't worry so much. We all have sense; we know that Meditation can not be done in front of a mirror. Its something different, can not practice in a class-room situation, in a group. We need to develop it of our own,….alone. And we have a Meditation room in all the Ashram to practice it. But some advance Yoga Postures and Kriyas are there, which we need to practice them in front of mirror to make them more perfect.
What a great topic. I practice with a mirror sometimes (but rarely) - but my yoga students at gyms are often surrounded by and swimming in mirrors. Thankfully, the gyms in New York City such as Equinox have added yoga rooms that only have a mirror on one side of the room. I've found that seeing one's reflection on all sides of the room during a yoga class, takes people out of balance - and they often fix their hair in the middle of a posture where they should be concentrating on balance. I sometimes make reference, in a fun and sweet way, to our relationship with the mirror and the physical body as we "see" it.
My favorite quote for classes and settings like these is from Rumi:
why do you need a mirror? you have to have 100 percent concentration. lookimg at the mirror takes out a few percentyages of focus. Thats what i think. But whatever suits you guys ;) maybe you need to know if youre doing the right thing.
