Hello, I just want to ask your opinion about this. A friend wants to attend yoga class but she do not want to wear fitted clothes. She is kinda chubby and insecure. She do not want to wear sleeveless also because of her underarm. I told her, t shirt would be fine, but she do not want to 'standout'.What clothes can you suggest for her? Please help. I really want her to try yoga.
Wow. I don't think she'd feel like she was standing out at all. My yoga students wear a wide variety of clothing during yoga ranging from the typical yoga pant and sport bra to baggy sweats and t-shirt. Remind your friend that it isn't about what she's wearing - it is about how she feels!

Hello! Yes, I have been a bit busy. Then I come here and try to catch up on all the reading. My mom/baby and mom/tot yoga classes are very work-intensive so they keep my busy planning and picking music/activities while I am on my computer.
Anyway, I am here. Ask away! :)

Actually I am planning to visit US (New York) for the first time on September 2008. So I need some information if you would help me. Where are you located in US? Well can I have your email so that can write in detail? Thanks for your response Tracey.
Actually I am pretty far from New York. I am in Colorado (on the Rocky Mountain range), but I'd be glad to help you if I can. My email is tracey500@msn.com.
I'll look for your message.

like what others said, advice your friend not to be overly conscious on what to wear cos it's more important to pay attention to what she feels and how this practice helps her on her day to day activities.
Hi. When I started, I had some pounds to lose and I still do. I can relate to your friend.... Standing out for me doesnt mean I'm not wearing a fitted top and cute pants, but I stand out because I am the biggest one i the class!
I got over that once I went and started making friends and realizing that all the people in class were really nice people and they didnt care if I was big or small or what I wore- but they were excited for me for doing something good for myself.
The other things that helped me in the beginning was a. finding a pair of pants that I could move in and feel good in that didnt feel like they were falling off me or going up my butt, b. finding a top that wouldnt be skin tight on me, but because of the fabric, wouldnt fall over my head during downward dog, and c. going to a studio that didnt have mirrors! This was a really big deal I think since- once I got there in my "big girl" yoga pants and t-shirt, I forgot about how I looked and enjoyed all the benefits yoga had to offer.
I dont know if this helps- or if she is still having trouble with this..but I thought I'd write my point of view in case there were others out there in the same boat.
Take care,
Benda

I enjoy wearing loose clothing either way I feel more free to flow that way. I usually wear a sports bra, comfy pants (capris work best for me so I am not tripping over them lol), try Old Navy for some comfy stretchy capri yoga pants, also I have a few tops I love to wear when I am in yoga. One is from Express, it is a long sleeve top that is very loose and the material is thin and soft. Also I loveee wearing a semi baggy t-shirt like one from target that is long with a zip up cotton hooded jacket type of thing...its very light, but when it comes to Shavasana or pray pose I like to slip my hood on. Maybe it sounds silly, but I feel more to my self if I am in a class and I can slip my hood on. Hope this helps! Have a beautiful day!

I like baggy-ness when I do yoga. I buy sweats a size larger than my usual size, and just draw string them secure.
My main reason is I don't like people staring at my body when I do yoga (crazy right?--but It throws me) .
I also like to be comfortable and feel free in my movement and not worry about a weggie (?spelling), or my chest showing too much. I mean some guys do show up and like to stare in classes at the female next to them. It throws me off.
Oye, but people look anyway probably. But at least in baggy clothes I am comfortable enough to close my eyes and dissapear in the experience. Some traditions like iyengar have you wear tight clothes, but I never was fond of the leotard feel.
