Hi dear......yes I am agree ...you must better not use dvd/cassetes...even books.....YOGA is a science you must learn under the guidence of an evoluted teacher ...its like an unknown path you want to go through.....you should take this path by guidance and help of people who know the way perfectly and its dangers...YOGA is not a sport...its a way of living ..it impacts your every aspect of your life...your body..your mind...your interactions with people even your way of feeding...everything may change by it ..in every step you need a kind and compassionate teacher to help you...you might find many questions in your mind which should be answered...so please be catious..and careful....start YOGA from an elementary class in your city but be sure you will select the best as possible as you can..I hope you success ...stay in touch....

Hello elenih53,

Odd that your profile states you are 11 years old.

Normally I would reply in the way the previous two posters have replied: I would caution a student about the shortcomings of study from a static source like a tape, DVD, or book.

However, that must be tempered with a sense that people come to yoga in this day from a variety of different places and in a variety of different ways. If one DVD has the result of one person studying yoga very deeply for the remained of their life in the physical body then it must surely be worth it.

Some students simply do not have access to a teacher. There are, of course, those who will not make the effort when the effort could be made. If you can access a teacher in any way please consider that even if there appears to be some initial obstacles. If that is not possible then consider a DVD from someone like Judith Hanson Lassiter. To me, her work is both sound and safe.

Hi elenih53,

Welcome to this forum. According to your profile you are 11 years old right. And you are having two kids. It is good that you are interested to learn Yoga. However I’ll tell you to find a teacher in your area to get proper guidance. You can go on line or watch DVD, whatever you like but only to increase your knowledge, when you already have started Yoga practice. Thanks..........

May be something wrong in profile updating with all the newbie....

Cos everybody’s Profile is stating the same age. One of my students from Malaysia has recently signup in this forum. He is above 40 years. He was also telling me the same thing.

God bless you

Yes Sir,

Something definitely wrong with date of birth submission.

Otherwise how everyone’s age is 11!!! However elenih53, you

should try to get a teacher to follow proper guidance.

I think it will be helpful if you contact a teacher rather than be contended with a DVD guide. Since you are a starter you must learn the basics by actually doing it. A teacher can help you through this process more efficiently and of course correctly. You must not do it on your own especially if it is your first time.

I do not recommand te use of DVD. If you want the anlignment of your body and squellette, you need not to be looking at something during yoga. And let me tell me a secret, not to a yoga teacher during you move. You have to look inside you. If your eyes are turned toward something, even slightely, it is not good for your muscles developpment.
It is not what somebody told me, I studied very long about that and the enlignment is veru important for the developpment of every part of the body.

Hi,
I also just got back into yoga after many years. I also have 2 kids and you need to give yourself time to stretch and learn the proper way to do the poses etc. Finding a teacher or a class is the best way. I am loving my practice and look forward to reaping the rewards of continual yoga practice.

Oh, whenever you join, the site does funking things with your sign in information. They had me as not even being born yet Isn't that something...

Since there aren't many places or teachers around the area that I live, and it can be quite expensive to take lessons from someone privately, I've found that DVDs really help me to develop my practice. However, if you want to know the history and various other forms of yoga, a teacher would be the only way to go. I just like doing yoga because it gives me greater flexiblity and keeps me healthy.

Hi. I too am a new mom. Congratualtions! I started practicing yoga before I was pregnant, during my pregnancy and post partum.

Yoga has really become popular as a type of exercise. Before you select the form of yoga that meets your needs, I would recommend that you gain an understanding of this exercise routine. It is more than a physical exercise, yoga balances the mind, body and spirit.

If you are looking for the spiritual rewards yoga offers, I agree with the other postings and attending a class will be your ultimate reward. But if you are looking for physical rewards with the side effect of bringing harmony to yourself, then there are some good DVDs/videos out there that will help you. Just make sure you understand the poses and are practicing them correclty. But if you are a regular workout guru, you will be able to accomplish this correctly.

One of the perks of buying a DVD is that you can practice yoga with many of the reknowned yoga instructors. This is something that you would not be able to do based on where you live and where the instructor is located.
Another benefit of having a DVD is that you are not constrained to a class schedule and you can practice yoga in your own home when you have time. Timing of your yoga routine is critical becasue you must be free from all distractions so that you benefit from it.
I have practiced with The Firm's yoga DVD and Gurmukh's Kundalini Yoga DVD.
Good luck and have fun!

Namaste,
Renee

wow! elenih53, it is really great to practice yoga again.... may I suggest that you need to have an instructor I mean real person not just a DVD that you will just watch on television... because I think we all need a real guidance in order to do yoga perfectly.
