Yoga which has
gained much popularity these days is a very ancient form of exercise.it has
been practiced since ages. With passing time it has only gained much popularity
and acceptance. The sages in the past centuries practiced meditation (dhyana,
pranayama) to connect their soul with the Creator. It has a mention in the
Vedas of Indian culture. The saints got enlightenment following yoga
religiously. It is Sanskrit word which means union of soul with God. It has a
mention in Bhagwad Gita, Upanishads back in 400 BC. Bhagwad Gita an epic has mentioned four yogas
namely Rajyoga, Karmayoga, Bhakktiyoga and Jnanayoga. Let us discuss these
forms of yoga in brief in the coming paragraphs.
Karmayoga means yoga through work.
·In
Sanskrit the word ‘karma’ means work. The people of ‘Rajasic’ nature who are
constantly active and involved in something or the other, do not get time for
meditationcan follow this yoga. This is
gaining enlightenment or moksha by dedicating yourself to your karma.
·It teaches ‘how to attain the ultimate’
through your work or karma. Lord Sri Krishna also taught this to Arjun while he
was in the battle field as per the mentions in Mahabharata. He preached Arjuna
that karma is above all even above the relationships one is bound into.
Rajyoga: Controlling your mind
The other most important form of this exercise
is controlling your mind. It’s your mind that leads to all your actions and
thoughts and hence controlling it helps you control your life. Mind is the
culprit of all the evil or the source of all the good deeds
The word yoga means unity or oneness and is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj which mens to join. This unity or joining is described in spiritual terms as the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. On a more practical level, yoga is a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotions.
