Yoga which has gained much popularity these days is a very ancient form of exercise.it has been practiced since ages. With passing time it has only gained much popularity and acceptance. The sages in the past centuries practiced meditation (dhyana, pranayama) to connect their soul with the Creator. It has a mention in the Vedas of Indian culture. The saints got enlightenment following yoga religiously. It is Sanskrit word which means union of soul with God. It has a mention in Bhagwad Gita, Upanishads back in 400 BC. Bhagwad Gita an epic has mentioned four yogas namely Rajyoga, Karmayoga, Bhakktiyoga and Jnanayoga. Let us discuss these forms of yoga in brief in the coming paragraphs.

Karmayoga means yoga through work.

· In Sanskrit the word ‘karma’ means work. The people of ‘Rajasic’ nature who are constantly active and involved in something or the other, do not get time for meditation can follow this yoga. This is gaining enlightenment or moksha by dedicating yourself to your karma.

· It teaches ‘how to attain the ultimate’ through your work or karma. Lord Sri Krishna also taught this to Arjun while he was in the battle field as per the mentions in Mahabharata. He preached Arjuna that karma is above all even above the relationships one is bound into.

Rajyoga: Controlling your mind

The other most important form of this exercise is controlling your mind. It’s your mind that leads to all your actions and thoughts and hence controlling it helps you control your life. Mind is the culprit of all the evil or the source of all the good deeds

The word yoga means unity or oneness and is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj which mens to join. This unity or joining is described in spiritual terms as the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. On a more practical level, yoga is a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotions.
