Hello every body,
I have been practicing yoga from 3 - 4 years. In 2006 January during Sun salutation practice I discovered a pain at my lower back area. The pain was incrteasing day by day, later that used to come down through the side of left leg. My teacher told me to stop yoga practice for a while. Then after 5 - 6 month I went to another yoga teacher (Indian) and he told me not to practice Sun-salutation. So from last 9 - 10 month I am not doing Sun salutation, but pain is still there, very little. I love Sun salutation and want to start again this nice practice of yoga. Is there any way to practice???
Thanks
Catherine

Hello Catherine,
Sun Salutation is good for young and fit people. After 45 or 50 when people start Yoga they should not start with Sun Salutation. I understand you love this nice practice of Yoga but if you start this the pain will come back to you again. So please consult your Yoga teacher there in your place and he will be the right judge to guide you properly.

Hi Catherine,
Please follow the yoga schedule that you have been following from 8 - 9 months, as it helped you to reduce pain at lower back. And wait until pain is removed completely then you start Sun salutation in a very slow manner under the guidance of your teacher.
Thanks
Alan

Hello Catherine.

Here are a few thoughts of mine within the yoga context. First you are asking about a therapeutic issue - the pain or dysfunction in the lower back. Without a lot more information I could not possibly assess it accurately and therefore it would be problematic to tell you to do this or do that AND have that direction be very effective. It may or may not. Best for such things to see and be seen by a well trained therapeutically oriented yoga teacher.

Of course when dealing with such issues there are always "things to do" and "things to avoid". They must go hand-in-hand like a marriage.

Likewise, in the Purna Yoga perspective, the approach to healing is three-pronged: asana/pranayama, nutrition/lifestyle, and emotional work. Again, these three things must merge to present a united front toward healing. In the absence of one it is possible for an issue to recede but it will often return later unless fully dealt with.

Now on to Surya Namaskar. There are 17 versions of Surya Namaskar. So my feedback will be relative to the classical form which does not include chaturanga dandasana, urdhva mukha svanasana, or other movements popularized by the power yoga flavor.

Here are my recommendations: flex or bend the knees going from standing (urdhva Hastasana) to forward bending (Uttanasana). Use Utkatasana in between when going from standing to bending and from bending to standing.

In Vanarasana (lunge or Monkey Pose) keep the back knee on the floor rather than lifted. Do not use maximum effort in Sarpasana (Serpent) or Bhujangasana (Cobra). In all back bending poses focus on the lift of the bottom of the belly up toward the collar bones.

If you have a more specific question about the version you are doing then please feel free to ask further.

Yoga is everywhere and nowhere at all

Thanks Gordon Kaplan, (is that your name!)
You are the only teacher who really understood my feelings. Please let me try with this Sun Salutation, the modified version of Purna Yoga. After few days practice I shall come back to you.

Thanks again

Actually, I do not like to tell what to do and not to do as asanas on the net because I dont know the person. When people start in this way, I do not continue the comversation. But I realised far ago that Purnayoga's conceling is very wise and advised for many things. Also, I did say many times that sun salutation is not always good, not for everybody. In yoga, when a pain comes, it is necessary to stop the exercice and to do something else. I cant explain more because I am not fluid in english. But when a pain comes in an exercice, there is ajustments to be done, or wisely, the exercice have to be avoided for an undetermined time, according to the recovery of the yogin. A yogin can hurt himself in doing yoga. it is why individual trainning is better for a serious yogin.

Namaste Catherine,

Its true that one should avoid the poses or exercises that can causes of pain like yours. You only told us that due to the previous practice you developed a pain at lower back region right. And it was decreasing as you stopped Sun Salutation. It is also true that you have a feeling of love for Sun Salutation that you developed during those previous days. Yes, we understand your feelings. And you should also understand the feelings of others. You please carry on with your practice with the modified version of Purna Yoga's Sun Salutation. I hope it will be easier for you and we are waiting here to hear form you.

Thanks.

I wish you good luck.
