if you have the opportunity to go to a class somewhere, or even do a private lesson with a teacher, start there. if you aren't in an area with those resources, you can get a yoga video or dvd and start that way, or even a book. if you have the intention and the willingness to learn you can do it. the best of luck.

goodmorning,
i really like the rodney yee book---poetry of the body. he is great instructor. i have heard that people think even his beginner dvds are intimidating. but i say, there is not really a better instructor to watch and learn the poses from.
and he makes you smile and have fun.
i also like sara ivanhoe for videos/dvd. i highly recommend the candelight yoga for beginners, and even experienced. it remains one of my all time favorites.
the best of luck.

Since you ask specifically "what is the first practice" the answer would be the study and subsequent living of Yama and Niyama.

Hello -- as a beginner myself, I have to say that the best video I have done to learn about alignment is Patricia Walden's Yoga Journal Yoga Basics. It is not fancy or exciting really, but it gives a great detailed instruction on mechanics and alignment. It rivals local teachers I have had. However, I have not tried the Ivanhoe video suggested by Toast and am going to google it. I have a Rodney Yee video I really like. It is super slow. I think he is great as well. I find he is a bit light on the breathing instruction even though he does series of poses. It is hard, I think, for experienced practitioners to remember how much beginners need instruction on breathing. Some people take to the breathing very easily, but most people don't. Maybe I focus on it more than I should, I dunno. Also, the citation Toast gave, yogajournal.com, has pretty good videos for a free resource.
Wishing you well!

I started at my gym 24 Hour Fitness. They have at least a few classes per wk and it's at basic levels. Good luck.
