Hello everyone!
I'm a newbie here and I've
been practicing yoga for the past 9 mo. Anyhow, I was just wondering if any of
you has tried doing yoga with your children? I'm thinking about
bringing my 3 year old son to yoga on weekends, I'd like to do yoga
with him it's prolly a great way to bond plus he really got a
flexible body, he sometimes imitates the poses I do. But I'm just not
sure if that's a good idea, I mean if it's safe for kiddos to do
these poses. I'd like to hear from you guys! Hope you can help me
out! Oh and do have any good books to recommend about yoga and
children? :) Thanks in advance!!

Hi loraM, i don't have a kid yet but i
think the idea of bringing your child with you sounds good. I've read
that there are a lot of yoga classes designed for kids, they have
“kid-friendly” poses so you won't have to worry about it! I think
it's perfectly safe.

Welcome to the yoga community LoraM . About the books, you can check out
YogaKids: Educating the Whole Child
Through Yoga, it's written by Marsha Wenig, another one is Born Yogis
by Susie Arnett, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, and Doug Kim. Most probably you
can find these stuff on amazon.com

i'm just wondering though, how early can you bring your child? i dont have children, but i'm curious. and yoga will definitely have relative effects on children's mind and body. wont that be undermining their childhood, though? yes, it would be a blessing for every parent that their kids dont throw tantrums and all (if yoga would affect them this way), but would that be normal for the kids? wouldn't it be hindering them to be "kids" if they're too, uhm, zen?

Hi LoraM!
I have done yoga with school aged children when I was an elementary teacher and now I do yoga with my children who are 2 and 1. It is true that there are yoga classes specifically for children and that yoga looks quite different than what adults practice. Kids need their yoga infused with lots of movement, sound and play and the juxtaposition of quiet awareness of the breath. If you are considering introducing yoga to your child in this setting, it is a great idea! Kids really enjoy yoga when it is presented correctly.
There are some books that I love for kids - YogaKids, Fly Like a Butterfly, and Itsy Bitsy Yoga (for babies, toddlers and small children). Enjoy!

I wouldn't worry about introducing yoga to kids too early. I started yoga with my children when they were infants as a way to relax at the end of the day. Really, what kid-friendly yoga introduces to children is an awareness of their bodies and breath in a fun way. Yoga for kids emphasizes honoring feelings that they experience - even ones of anger, frustration and saddness and also teaches them how to appropriately release these feelings. I've been doing yoga with my kids and I still see tantrums! LOL

Hey Tracey, how often do you practice yoga with your kids?

Well, I would say that it is multiple times a week because I teach yoga poses to my kids whenever the moment makes sense. For example, if we're at the zoo and we see a giraffe, I'll teach her that pose. If we are playing with a little toy bird, I'll show her tree pose and we'll pretend her hand is a nest for the bird. I also take moments that could be meltdown moments like waiting in a long line and show her a challenging balance pose to keep her busy trying to achieve it. She likes to pretend she's a puppy so I've taught her DFD, UFD, and puppy poses during those times.
Also we have the book Little Yoga that we read before bed and we like to do the poses illustrated in the book.

The poses you do with your kids seem interesting! One time I taught my son a couple of simple poses like the warrior and tree, I can say it works well on him, he even told me that he taught his classmates these poses!
