Hello. I am looking for tips on Lotus pose. I would like to try my meditation in this position but I struggle getting into the pose. I worry about damage or improper strain on my knees. Thanks

Peace.

Hello,

It is true that Lotus pose is a meditative posture. But if you are not comfortable in this pose then you can not even concentrate or meditate right. So first you try with one leg up that is Half Lotus or Ardha Padmasana. This way you change the position of the legs after few seconds or minutes. This pose will help you to increase flexibility of your hip joints. You can practice your meditation in any comfortable sitting posture until then.

Love & best wishes

Yes, i also cannot do Lotus pose, very painful if i go to bring both the legs up. One leg i can keep on my thigh easily. But when i go to bring another leg up then i can not even hold the pose for a second. My teacher told me to practice only Half Lotus for few weeks.
Thanks

It depends on flexibility and varies person to person. If you are comfortable in half lotus then it may take few months to sit in Padmasana comfortably. But don’t worry so much, many Yoga master can not sit in Lotus.

Practice Half Lotus every day for few min and try to increase the time of sitting every week. When you are at home and doing something, try to do that simply sitting on the floor as much time as you can.

I mean you try to develop a sitting habit on the floor. Nowadays, you people don’t have the opportunity to sit on the floor. But in India, we still do many things sitting on the floor in Ashram. Such as: reading books, eating food, even while working with computer. We have small table (1 & ½ feet height) to use study purpose and we need to sit on the floor. When you are at home and doing something, try to do that simply sitting on the floor as much time as you can. That will help you to increase flexibility of hip joints, natural hip opening class. Haha..

Lotus pose is good, but let us not be mad after this.Comfort and stability are the keys, and if you cannot get it in lotus pose,we should adopt an easier pose. Please note that the poses are means to an end, they are not end in themselves.End is stability, comfort and then pranayam and Dhyan.
My advise to everyone is to adopt Sidha Asana. It is easier to do,and in many respects better than even Lotus pose.Sidha Asan helps in closing your openings at the base of the spine, and thus helps in pshing the Apan up the spine. It thus activate your Mooldhara Chakra faster. It is called Sidha asana because many Sidhs(seers) reached Samadhi by using it.My students move faster ahead in meditation and activation of Chakras because I advise them to adopt whatever pose is comfortable to them for longer periods.

Padmasana (Lotus Pse) is one of the best poses for meditation. It allows the body to be held completely steady for long periods of time. It holds the trunk and head like a pillar with the legs as the firm foundation. As the body is steadied the mind becomes calm. This steadiness and calmness is the fiest step towards real meditation. Padmasana directs the flow of prana from mooladhara chakra in the perineum, to sahasrara chakra in the heaad, heightening the experience of meditation.

However, for persons who cannot do this asana or have problem with doing it, there is a very good preliminary practice. The name of this asana is butterfly and if one is regular with this asana, sooner or later, he will be able to sit in padmasana.

Lotus pose or padmasana assists innumerable patients to get rid of their heart and lung problems. It helps immensely to cure constipation problems as well. You have to practice it according to the recommendations and advice though. Know padmasana in detail and how it can actually help you before actually practicing it.
