Bhraman Pranayama
Written by Super Member: yogitonmoy

Bhraman means walking and Pranayama is Yogic breathing. This is the way through which we practice Yogic breathing or Pranayama, during morning or evening walk. This is included in Sahaj-Pranayama, as Kumbhaka or retention of breath is avoided here. Only Puraka (Inhalation) and Rechaka (Exhalation) are followed in a systematic (slow and steady) manner.
Place: Select a place which is free from dust and smoke. A garden or park is the best place for Bhraman Pranayama.
Time: Morning or evening and obviously not after having food
Techniques
- The body must be kept straight while walking. Inhalation and exhalation should be slow, steady and deep through the nostrils and in a rhythm with the steps.
- Count mentally while inhaling and while exhaling. The duration of exhalation will be longer than that of the inhalation. If we inhale for 2 seconds (2 counts), then we should exhale for 4 seconds.
After a few weeks of practice, the breathing capacity will definitely be increased. One can start with a 5 - 15-minute session. In this way, the duration of walk or Bhraman Pranayama can increase as soon as stamina gradually increases from 20 to 30 minutes and an hour. We should remember that being in a hurry is outlawed in the Breathing Techniques of Loknath Yogic System. If one practices continuously, the breathing capacity of the air cells in the lungs will increase day by day. One can also count the steps while inhaling and exhaling in the same manner. However, breath holding should be avoided in this Pranayama.
Benefits
All the benefits of Sahaj-Pranayama can be achieved in this Bhraman Pranayama. It also cures cough and colds rapidly. It helps to increase stamina as it helps in increasing cardiovascular endurance. The working capacity of the heart and lungs increases through regular practice of this Pranayama. Blood purifies as the carbon dioxide is eliminated during this time. This is really very effective in the maintenance and restoration of physical and psychological health after suffering from a severe illness. It can be included in all types of rehabilitative programs for the older people to maintain independent living in the community. Those who do not like Yoga, Asana, Mudra or any other exercises, they can find this breathing technique interesting in an open greenery and airy atmosphere. If anyone practices Bhraman Pranayama regularly, he or she can prevent colds and cough, asthma, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, headache, fever, and other diseases.
