Viniyoga

Viniyoga Yoga has gained popularity all around the world for the mental and physical benefits that it gives practitioners. Not everybody knows, however, that there are different Styles of Yoga. Some types can be very intense, while some may focus on gentle patterned breathing while doing the asanas or Yoga Postures One of the latter is Viniyoga.

Viniyoga is a type of Hatha Yoga that was first taught by Sri T. Krishnamacharya after intently studying the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. His teachings were continued by his son T.K.V. Desikachar in the 1970s. It distinguishes itself from all other types of Yoga through its emphasis on the uniqueness of the ability of each yoga practitioner. Hence, it is usually practiced one-on-one with a guru or Yoga teacher.

The term "viniyoga" itself means "application". This implies that Yoga practice is applied according to each practitioner’s needs and capabilities. The length and intensity of training is adjusted depending on what the Yoga student can do.

Viniyoga’s Asana practice is distinct from other types of Yoga for four reasons. One, Yoga Postures are done repeatedly and aren’t just held in position. Second, the goal in Asana practice is not to achieve the finest form but to have the best effect on the Yoga practitioner’s body. Third, breathing patterns play a very large part, as breathing affects the kind of movements performed and their effects on the body. Most importantly, various movements are adapted to—and combined depending on the needs of each student for the moment.

Asanas aren’t the only things practiced in Viniyoga. Yoga in itself aims to achieve physical, spiritual, and mental well-being, and Viniyoga in this sense is no different. Certain programs also teach chanting, Meditation, and textual study. The teaching of these likewise depends on the needs of the Yoga student.

The special one-on-one technique of Viniyoga makes it more relaxing than Ashtanga Yoga or Power Yoga, another type of Hatha Yoga, wherein the movements are intense and better-suited for those whose main aim is to develop strength and endurance. The unique approach of Viniyoga to each student guarantees that everyone masters the art by his or her own pace. It makes the Yoga student feel peaceful and relaxed. Hence, it has gained a reputation for being therapeutic.
