Studies Show Yoga Burns Few Calories
MONDAY, 29 MAY 2006
WIS Television has recently reported that contrary to popular belief, yoga and pilates do not burn as much calories as higher-intensity activities. Quoting Cedric Bryant, the article said that if one wants to undergo aerobic conditioning and to burn calories, one should supplement his or her practice of yoga and pilates with, "more conventional cardiovascular type workouts."
The report is based on the findings of the studies conducted by the American Council on Exercise. The studies show that 55 minutes of yoga burns 144 calories while two 50-minute sessions of pilates burns around 250 calories. That is less than, say, McDonald's Quarter Pounder with cheese, which, according to www.calorie-count.com, has 540 calories per serving.
