YoKids, Yoga in Schools
WEDNESDAY, 27 DECEMBER 2006
Yoga is now finding its way into schools and serves as an important role in the health and well-being of children across the country and specifically in the mid-coast area.
According to http://camden.villagesoup.com, yoga enables children to know themselves and their behavior more deeply. Likewise, it only takes several sessions, between 5-15 minutes, to achieve positive results like better focus and concentration, more creativity and responsible behavior and enhanced academic achievement.
These results are quantifiable, visible and real. The following is supported by scientific research:
- Increased attention span
- Increased self control
- Reduced anxiety
- Increased memory
- Decreased heart rate
- Increased motor skill performance
- Increased muscular fitness
- Improved posture
- Improved communication skills
All these benefits are achieved by utilizing Yoga based techniques such as conscious breathing, basic yoga poses and simple movement games and visualizations. Our children become more self-aware and better able to manage their behavior.
A non-profit organization called YoKids, staffed by Lily Goodale and Lynette Moore, has been busy this last year introducing these tools to students and teachers alike. YoKids has also been providing instruction to teachers. There are currently 16 schools in Maine that incorporate Yoga in their school system.
If you are interested in such a program for your school, please call Lily Goodale at 207-236-6001 or email her at ngoodale@aol.com.
