Many students at the University of Florida in US are enrolling for yoga classes. Yoga is becoming one of the popular ways to exercise. However, when yoga positions are done incorrectly, it can lead to students getti
ng injured.
Stacy Tasman, a sophomore at UF, takes yoga class twice a week. She said, “Our instructor teaches us how we can strengthen our muscles through yoga to prevent injuries.”
Priel Schmalbach, a power yoga fitness instructor at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, said, "Physically, yoga will relax tension from your muscles and lubricate your joints so they move freely. When your body is loose, you feel free." He has never known anyone to incur an injury in yoga that required him or her to stop practicing it. Schmalbach explains, “A big cause of injuries I see is caused by competitiveness.” He advises yoga practitioners to, “Listen to your body. If it says stop, stop. Find your comfortable place.”

Matthew Sanford from Duluth, Minn., 42, is named as a semifinalist in “America’s Greatest Hometown Hero”. He has been one of the nation’s top 40 heroes in the 6th Annual Volvo for Life Awards - an annual, nationwide
search for real-life heroes in America. Sanford was left paralyzed from the chest down after a tragic car crash when he was 13. He discovered yoga at 25 and the power of mind and body connection. Now he is a nationally-renowned yoga teacher, author and an expert in mind-body integration.
Sanford is the founder of Mind Body Solutions, a non-profit organization which believes that minds and bodies work better together. It offers programs in the workplace, at the yoga studio, and in the community. Sanford is a pioneer in adapting yoga for people living with disabilities. In his personal memoir, A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence, Sanford shares his philosophy on the importance of mind-body relationship for everyone.

CANADA - Laughter yoga originated in India in 1995. It is the brainchild of medical doctor Madan Kataria. Laughter yoga combines yogic breathing exercises with belly laughs. With this type of yoga, participants do s
imulated laughter wherein they breathe and fake laughter.
Oceana Hall, a certified laughter yoga teacher, said, recent studies showed that laughter strengthens the body’s immune response and washes away stress hormones. The idea with simulated laughter is that it sparks contagion. The sound of someone else laughing makes us laugh also. You do not laugh at other people but you laugh with them. Laughter yoga is a shared and communal experience.
Hall added that laughter yoga seems to penetrate into one’s true, feeling nature. The release of laughter also allows for the release of sadness.
