Prevent Injuries when Practicing Yoga
THURSDAY, 29 NOVEMBER 2007
Many students at the University of Florida in US are enrolling for yoga classes. Yoga is becoming one of the popular ways to exercise. However, when yoga positions are done incorrectly, it can lead to students getting injured.
Stacy Tasman, a sophomore at UF, takes yoga class twice a week. She said, “Our instructor teaches us how we can strengthen our muscles through yoga to prevent injuries.”
Priel Schmalbach, a power yoga fitness instructor at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, said, "Physically, yoga will relax tension from your muscles and lubricate your joints so they move freely. When your body is loose, you feel free." He has never known anyone to incur an injury in yoga that required him or her to stop practicing it. Schmalbach explains, “A big cause of injuries I see is caused by competitiveness.” He advises yoga practitioners to, “Listen to your body. If it says stop, stop. Find your comfortable place.”
