New Workout Incorporates Yoga & Strength Training

THURSDAY, 31 JANUARY 2008

A new type of workout is making the buzz in New York – the Bar Method. This is a workout that combines aspects of yoga, Pilates, strength training and stretching. This was first introduced in the new studio in Rye Brook called Rye Ridge Studio.

The Bar Method, which incorporates a ballet bar, is a California-import rooted in physical therapy. It was developed by German-born dance instructor Lotte Berk in the 1960s but only gained popularity in 2001.

Jane Culiford, owner of Rye Ridge Studio, is considering hiring additional instructors and opening more studios to accommodate the growing number of women signing up for the class. She said, “I think it's catching on because women are seeing results so fast.”

The Bar Method incorporates yoga, but the muscles are worked to the point of exhaustion which, according to Culiford, makes them more pliable for stretching, leading to more definition.
