Monday, 30 June 2008A truly unique opportunity for those who already have a basic knowledge of Sanskrit to expand their understanding is by studying with a master teacher and scholar from India. Presentation of the texts will include grammar, various linguistic aspects, and philosophy.
Required: Acquaintance with the devanagari script and a preliminary knowledge of Sanskrit vocabulary. Beginners may att end informally.
This summer, Prof. Ram Karan Sharma will again offer three courses:
July 21 - August 1, Mon - Fri: Kalidasa's Meghadutam, Purvamegha
Kalidasa may well be the most famous and respected poet of the Sanskrit language. His well-known work Meghadutam (First Part) represents an afflicted mind's communion with the cloud, with rivers and mountains. These appear here to be the spokespersons of Nature as well as the healers of conflicts and tensions.
August 4 - 15, Mon - Fri: Mundakopanishad
Mundakopanishad is one of the major Upanishads, the scriptures which constitute the ancient source of all Vedanta philosophy.
This text contains messages of utmost spiritual and philosophical heights. It also emphasizes the significance of rituals for cultivating proper relationship between the mundane and the Divine - while the same rituals can become ineffective due to "overdoing" or misunderstanding. The metaphor of the two birds, as quoted in this Upanishad, illustrates the difference between the individual or personal and the cosmic consciousness.
Aug 18 - 29, Mon - Fri: Panini Sutras, Chapters 4 & 5 (Advanced Sanskrit Grammar Course)
Chapters 4 and 5 of Panini's Ashtadhyayi deal with "secondary derivative affixes", covering an extensive area in Sanskrit linguistics. The term Taddhita, the title of this section, implies the meaning "well-being for all".

Monday, 30 June 2008The Australian School of Meditation and Yoga has formed a partnership with the Gold Coast City Council's Active and Healthy Program to offer the Gold Coast community a wide range of healthy living programs based on the yoga lifestyle.
"I was shocked to see recent statistics rating Australia as a fatter nation than America," said Ray Linsley, program coordinator for the Australian Sc hool of Meditation and Yoga. "But there are positive steps people can take and that's what our yoga and meditation programs are all about."
Starting July 21, Australian School of Meditation and Yoga roll out a variety of new yoga and meditation activities across the Coast, including early morning yoga in the park, yoga and meditation in local libraries and in community centres. Best of all, the Active and Healthy programs are free or run by donation.
"Yoga and meditation are for everyone," said Ray Linsley, "It's the ideal way to find your healthy weight and unlike other weight loss and exercise programs, it is a complete system for mental and physical health."
The Australian School of Meditation and Yoga is a non-profit community organization that has been offering the benefits of meditation and yoga to the Gold Coast community for over 20 years.

Sunday, 29 June 2008The Pratt Recreation Commission in Kansas offers yoga classes for adults. The classes will be held at the Municipal Building and will be facilitated by yoga instructor Joni Siemens.
Participants have the option to sign up for either a day class or an evening class. The day class, called Yoga for Energy and Strength, will start on July 1, and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 9-10am. The fee is $40. The evening class, or Yoga for Relaxation, will begin on July 7 and will be held every Monday at 7-8pm. The fee for the evening yoga class is $20.
