Dimple Sthankiya, is currently starring in the BBC Three TV series, ‘The Last Millionaire’ and is no stranger to stressful situations.

“Obviously, it was very tough” adds Dimple, “but that is the nature of the show and something we all understood before agreeing to become involved.”

“To add to my experience was the lack of space and time to myself as we worked incredibly long hours and were always living in close proximity with each other.” says Dimple. The entrepreneurs stayed in backpacker hostels and survived on a limited budget for food and drink.

“That lack of time and space was actually one of the toughest parts of the whole experience” continued Dimple, “but my yoga routine helped me through it. One of the many great things about yoga is that you don’t need special or expensive equipment to totally de-stress; I could just get up early, roll out my mat & either prepare for the busy day ahead. Or relax after a day trying to make money.”

Recently, Dimple has set up her own innovation and ventures consultancy The Blue Seed and is a Co-Founder of Good Vibes, a media company in development with fellow entrepreneur Kerrie Keeling.

The holiday season officially begins with Thanksgiving and ends after the New Year’s celebrations leftovers are gone. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or any other winter holiday, this can be the hardest time of the year to follow heart healthy habits. Here are some tips to help get you through the holiday season:

Heart Healthy Holiday Eating Tips:

1) Do not g
o to holiday parties hungry to avoid overeating at the party. Eat regular meals before the party and do not skip meals. Drink plenty of water before you go.
2) Avoid talking and socializing around the buffet or in the kitchen.
3) Watch your portion sizes. Moderation is key.
4) Eat slowly. Put your fork down between bites. Eating slower allows you to feel full when you have eaten enough.
5) Avoid high fat items. Fill your plate with healthy choices like fruits and vegetables. Bring a healthy meal or snack to a potluck dinner. Take healthy snacks with you when you go food shopping. Never go food shopping when you are hungry.
6) If you are the cook, select healthy dishes prepared in a healthy manner.
a. Try to bake, broil or grill food. Avoid fried foods.
b. Use low fat sour cream and sauces. Avoid cream sauces.
c. When baking, try to use fat free sprays or lower fat ingredients.
d. Try to add beans to salads, casseroles and appetizers. Beans add fiber to the meal and helps you feel fuller.
e. Select whole wheat and whole grain products like crackers, bread and pasta. Avoid white flour.
f. Serve fresh fruit and vegetables. Include fresh fruit in dessert options with low fat cool whip or dark chocolate.
g. Offer bite-sized desserts that are low fat.
h. User smaller plates to encourage people to take smaller portions.
i. Serve fruit and vegetables as the main dish and meat as a side dish.

Heart Healthy Drinking Tips:
1) Limit alcoholic beverages to one or two servings per day.
2) Drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages.
3) Eat food prior to and while drinking alcoholic beverages.
4) Do not drink and drive.
5) Choose lighter options to cut back on extra calories. Try spritzers, lite beer or low calorie mixers. Avoid drinks mixed with cream and frozen drinks.)

Heart Healthy Activity Tips:
1) Participate in outings that involve physical activity like skiing, sleigh riding, ice skating and walking.
2) At the shopping malls park in the furthest spot from the store to increase your walking.
3) Go window shopping and enjoy the holiday decorations. Take your pedometer with you and count your steps. Aim for 10,000 steps per day. 4) Dance at holiday parties.
5) Schedule exercise/physical activity into you routine. Exercise increases your energy level.
6) Take the dog for a walk and enjoy the holiday decorations in the neighborhood. 7) Go Christmas caroling.
8) Cut down your own Christmas tree.
9) Take the stairs whenever possible instead of elevators and escalators.

Tips for Managing Holiday Stress:
1) Schedule some down time for yourself to relax and de-stress
2) Learn some relaxation techniques and use them throughout your stressful days. Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can be very relaxing.
3) Include a chair massage for yourself during holiday shopping trips.
4) Remember to have fun each and every day. Find some humor in every day life. Laughter is a great way to relieve stress.
5) Try to always keep a positive attitude and surround yourself with happy people.
6) Try not to focus on money issues every day. If you have made financial mistakes in the past, use it as a learning experience and avoid similar mistakes in the future.

1) Exercise items like pedometers; resistance bands; exercise mats; exercise balls; jump ropes; heart rate monitors; exercise tapes, videos and DVDs; sneakers, exercise outfits and hand weights, all make great gift ideas.
2) Heart healthy cookbooks, juicers, and popcorn machines.
3) Healthy foods: fruit baskets, fruit of the month clubs, assorted unsalted nuts, flavor-infused olive oils, red wines, herbal or green teas, dark chocolates and high fiber baked goods.
4) Stress relievers: gift certificates for massage or health clubs, aromatherapy candles, pillows, bath salts, Yoga or Tai Chi videos, tapes and books.
5) Give the gift of your time. Spend time with an elderly relative, neighbor or friend. Offer a ride to the store, pharmacy or doctor’s office to those needing assistance.
6) Offer to be an exercise buddy to someone starting a new exercise program. It is more fun to work out with a friend and it will benefit both of you.

Guests attending The ASBC 2008 Holiday Mixer at the exclusive Tower Club on December 10th, will have an opportunity to network and celebrate the season with their peers from the government sector and participate in turning silent auction items such as a weekend getaway to Southern Maryland into "A Day of Beauty" for young women undergoing lifesaving treatments for breast cancer.

Host o
f the annual event, The American Small Business Coalition (The ASBC), a membership-based decision support organization founded in 2004 by Guy and Margaret Timberlake, is credited with facilitating programs and activities resulting in more than $2B in direct and subcontract awards for small, medium and large companies working to support the mission requirements of government agencies. In previous years The ASBC has supported charitable organizations like the USO, Fisher House and Casey Cares Foundation in its annual giving activities.

Founded by Maimah Karmo in 2006, while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for Stage 2 breast cancer at age thirty-two, Tigerlily provides support to young women affected by breast cancer with programs that include the Chemotherapy Buddy Program, Funds for Families Program, Project Gratitude and A Day of Beauty. The organization provides women with hands-on support during treatment, and education and awareness focused on the unique needs of young women, including fertility, lifestyle, long-term health, financial challenges and connecting with others with similar experiences.

A "Day of Beauty" is a full day of pampering and relaxation for women who are undergoing treatment and those who are survivors of breast cancer as well as “well women”. The event brings beauty practitioners, make-up artists, yoga instructors, masseuses, nutritionists, healthcare experts and more, and provides these women with a day of “taking care of you”. During "A Day of Beauty" women are fitted for wigs, receive manicures, pedicures, massages and facials while learning about complementary and alternative methods to improved health. This event is intended as an oasis of healing, creating “wellness” energy and connecting. It is one of many programs provided to support women fighting this disease and providing education to those who are not.

"This year we selected to spotlight Tigerlily Foundation because of the very necessary awareness and support activities they are conducting," explains Margaret Timberlake, President of The American Small Business Coalition. "Many of our family and friends have been affected by breast cancer in one form or another and Maimah Karmo, a survivor herself, is a very motivating woman leading an inspirational organization which Guy and I wanted to support."

Maimah is a regular speaker at conferences and events and has appeared in magazines such as Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Global Woman and the SABCS/Cure Magazine. She has been featured on Fox 5, WJLA 7, News Channel 8, and most recently the Oprah Winfrey Show where she joined fellow survivor and actress Christina Applegate. She was also interviewed on Good Morning America by breast cancer survivor and host Robin Roberts.

Funds raised during the silent auction and charity raffle that evening will be donated to Tigerlily on behalf of The ASBC, it's Members and guests. Some of the items to be auctioned include; boxing gloves autographed by Sugar Ray Leonard; a FlightSeeing Tour for two to Harpers Ferry; season tickets for two provided by the DC Armor, the area's new arena football team; a weekend getaway to the Back Creek Inn on Solomon's Island; a ladies tote from the Coakley Signature Suede Collection and a Joe Theisman autographed football.

Incorporating a few easy 2-minute yoga moves into your daily life can be the difference between dealing with excruciating pain and stress and being pain-free. Renowned yoga instructor, author, and founder of Functional Synergy, Susi Hately Aldous is dedicated to helping people overcome pain and injuries with a comprehensive regimen of customized yoga therapy programs.

Here, she share
s two very simple techniques for the desk worker, and anyone dealing with stress, who is seeking to alleviate much of the pain through easy stretching, breathing, and overall movement of the body.

Twist It Out The core area of the body may oftentimes feel stress from nervousness or digestive problems that can hit anyone morning or night. “I love this particular twist when I am spending my day working on the computer,” says Susi. “It helps wring out tension in the back, neck, and shoulders.”

It takes less than 2 minutes.
Here's how:
1. Sit tall, feet firmly planted, sitting bones equally positioned on the chair.
2. Place your right hand on your left knee and your left hand behind you on your chair seat.
3. Inhale, and as you exhale, twist to your left. Be easy – don't go to your maximum.
4. Take two more breaths and then switch direction.
5. Be sure you can breathe easy and your jaw is relaxed.


Flow Fact: Nervous tension in the belly can lead to back pain, eye strain and general uneasiness. Releasing the associated muscular tension can bring much ease, calmness and clarity.

Chest Release to Ease the Neck, Shoulders and Back Whether you use a laptop, BlackBerry, or desktop computer or whether you drive, fly, or sit at a desk for most of the working day, the tendency after a few hours of work is to slouch – spine rounded and head poking forward. When this type of posture is held for a period of time, the muscles in the chest and neck tighten. The following exercise releases the muscles of your chest to reinvigorate and rejuvenate.

It takes less than 2 minutes. Here's how:
1. Sit at the edge of your chair with equal weight on your sitting bones.
2. Feel your feet planted on the floor. Relax your toes. Breathe.
3. Gently fist your hands, with thumbs pointing up to the ceiling.
4. Move your arms backward – you may feel this in your chest and/or your arms.
5. Relax your jaw, and keep your shoulders relaxed, and moving down your back (don't let them round forward).
6. Breathe four or five times, then release. Repeat three to five times, slowly and easily.


Flow fact: Releasing the muscles of the chest can ease tension in the neck, jaw, and back.
