San Mateo-based Nandi Yoga (www.nandiyoga.com) continues to advocate for green business practices as it unveils six shiny, new bike racks on 8th Street. And, to drive its efforts forward, the studio has a Green Yoga Program for students who walk, bike or take public transportation (with a free class for every ten classes they attend).

The new bike racks were made possible through a par
tnership with between Nandi, Bike San Mateo, the City of San Mateo, and Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance. “Bike San Mateo County was extremely pleased to assist Nandi Yoga to get city approval and partial funding for their bicycle racks,” said Steve Vanderlip, Chairman.

By working together, the process of acquiring and installing the racks was expedited and the costs were lower than if Nandi had tried to do the job by itself: Bike San Mateo helped facilitate the approval of the project, the Alliance provided a significant portion of the funding, the City installed the racks at cost, and Nandi covered the remaining expenses and donated the racks to the City.

In April, Nandi was officially certified as a Green Business by the City of San Mateo and San Mateo County under the award-winning Green Business Program. The announcement established the studio, which was recently included in a green yoga feature article in Yoga Journal, as a leading advocate for green business within the United States’ yoga community.

The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance (commute.org) is dedicated to addressing the challenges involved in getting to and from work in San Mateo County by helping people find ways to get to work that are faster, cheaper, and/or easier through commuter information, employer programs, and city transportation demand management partnerships. The Alliance is funded by the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Bike San Mateo (www.bikesmc.org) is dedicated to facilitating and encouraging people to get out and ride; to work, to play, to relax and to experience the simply joy of riding one’s bicycle. Their vision is for San Mateo County to fully support bicycles as viable transportation in accordance with the Complete Streets Act, AB 1358.

At Nandi Yoga, people of all ages and abilities practice yoga in an earth-friendly environment, supported by nurturing, experienced teachers and fellow practitioners. The studio offers a wide range of daily classes in diverse styles for adults, children and families.

The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) today opens its register reflexology practitioners which means that members of the public will be able to choose their registered reflexologist in the knowledge that they meet national standards of conduct and competence.

Launched with government backing through the Department of Health who recently said, ”if patients choose to us
e complementary or alternative therapy, the Government’s advice is to choose a practitioner registered with a reputable voluntary registration body such as the CNHC”, the register opened in January 2009. Members of the public who use complementary healthcare will for the first time be able to verify that their reflexologist is registered with the first UK wide regulator.

The voluntary register will open over the course of this year to a wide range of complementary and natural healthcare practitioners. Reflexology is the fourth discipline for which the register has opened this year, joining massage therapy, nutritional therapy and aromatherapy.

By registering with the CNHC, reflexology practitioners will be seen as meeting the ‘gold standard’ within their field and will be entitled to display the quality mark which is given to practitioners upon registration.

Maggie Dunn, CEO of the CNHC explained: “We are delighted that CNHC is today opening its register to reflexology practitioners. Members of the public who use or are interested in using reflexology will be able to check whether the practitioner they’re seeing is registered with the CNHC.”

Continues Maggie, “Public safety is paramount and it is vital that practitioners meet the CNHC minimum standards of qualification and/or experience and in addition, they are signed up to a rigorous code of conduct. Not only will people looking for a reflexologist have peace of mind but practitioners too will benefit through increased public confidence.”

Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hands using a variety of hand techniques. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands. Reflexology practitioners believe that such work may bring about a physical change to the body, or improve general health.

Throughout the rest of 2009, the Register will be opened to further disciplines, as they become ready and wish to register, and include: Yoga therapy, Shiatsu, Alexander technique, Bowen technique, Cranial therapy, Naturopathy and Reiki.

For further information about registration, visit www.cnhc.org.uk

How many times have you heard someone say, "I'd really like to do yoga but I just don't have time for it?" That is no longer an excuse. The new book, Yoga in No Time at All, published by PranaPower, LLC, provides 39 poses that can be done while you are brushing your teeth, putting your socks on, and during many other activities.

These poses will assist you in maintaining strength, bala
nce, and flexibility and require little effort. The description of each pose includes:
- time required
- benefits
- difficulty level
- muscles awakened
- related traditional yoga poses.

"What's exciting about this," says author Joel DiGirolamo, "is that it's not just about poses I have created. It's a collaborative effort since anyone can contribute a pose. Three of the poses in this book were contributed by others and anyone can contribute a pose for subsequent editions. This draws the reader and practitioner deeper into the book for a richer experience."

A section on workstation ergonomics and a break time series make this book an ideal addition to corporate wellness programs to promote fitness and productivity at the office. A glossary of anatomical parts, references, and an extensive index make this comprehensive work a valuable companion for all individuals wanting to bring more movement into their lives. Yoga instructors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and all other health practitioners will find this book to be a valuable asset.

About the Book
Yoga in No Time at All was published on June 8, 2009. This 168 page, 6"x9" softcover book (ISBN 978-0-9770884-6-1) is available through the nationwide wholesaler Baker & Taylor, New Leaf Distributing, Amazon.com, and other book retailers. In observation of National Yoga Month September 2009, the Yoga Health Foundation calls for all yoga studios, teachers and students to go online at www.yogamonth.org and get involved to create one Yoga Month event in every city across the United States.

The Yoga Health Foundation, a nonprofit 501 c(3) organization based in Los Angeles, CA, was founded by Johannes R. Fisslinger as a mind
body fitness movement to inspire individuals, families and communities to live a healthier lifestyle.

To achieve this goal, Fisslinger created the National Yoga Month Awareness Campaign. In 2008, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion deemed September (followed by Breast Cancer Awareness in October) to be National Yoga Awareness Month and listed it as an official health observance at healthfinder.gov.

National Yoga Month is a campaign to educate and inspire youth and adults to take responsibility for their health by focusing on prevention and living a healthy lifestyle. Yoga Month provides the perfect opportunity to begin to create small lifestyle changes for yourself and your family.

Yoga studios and teachers across the nation will donate yoga classes and organize their own local Yoga Month events to help bring greater awareness to the field yoga. Studios and teachers will also encourage new students to try yoga for the first time by accepting the Yoga Month Card (One Week Free Yoga).

National Yoga Month is supported by a variety of local and national companies like YogaFit, Lucy, Jade Yoga, Shakti Mat, Be Present, True Bloom, The Hub LA Yoga Studio, Samasati Retreats and media organizations like Organic Spa Magazine, LA Yoga, MyYogaOnline.com and Yogamates.com.

Visit www.yogamonth.org to add Yoga Month events or donation classes. New students may receive and print out the Yoga Month Card good for One Week Free Yoga at hundreds of participating yoga studios nationwide.

Free-spirited travelers can ‘relive’ part of the 1960s and discover wondrous India as The Beatles did on their life-changing 1968 visit there, on “The Beatles In India Tour.” The 18-day tour will be led by Emmy-award winning film producer and director, Paul Saltzman, who stayed with and exclusively photographed The Beatles during their visit to India. “The Beatles wrote 48 songs in 7 weeks on tha t trip – the single most creative period in their illustrious career,” said Saltzman.

Organized by Bestway Tours & Safaris, the fully escorted tour will visit Rishikesh and other spiritual and special Indian sites where The Beatles came together, and will meet Indian musicians who know and performed with members of the group. It includes three days in Rishikesh, a holy city on the Ganges River which is a gateway to the Himalayas where The Beatles spent considerable time, and a visit to the former ashram where The Beatles meditated. Travelers will meet Indian classical musician, composer and Grammy Award winner Ravi Shankar, who taught George Harrison of The Beatles to play the sitar, and visit Ajit Singh, a famous Vichitra Veena player who also performed with Harrison. There will be visits to the historic “Pink City” of Jaipur, Udaipur, the holy city of Haridwar, Mumbai, the capital city New Delhi, and Agra to see the magnificent “Taj Mahal.” Optional yoga sessions, whitewater rafting, and spa treatment can add to the aura.

Departure Date & Costs
On Feb. 11, 2010, the tour will start in the southern city of Trivandrum and end in New Delhi on Feb. 28. There is an optional four-day, medium-grade Himalayas trek to conclude the trip. North American travelers can fly from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, New York, and many other gateways, with estimated US/Canada-India roundtrip airfare of US$1600.

The tour costs US$7890 (per person based on double occupancy, excluding airfare to/from India), and includes inter-India airfare, five-star hotel accommodations, and breakfast and dinner on 17 days. An optional four-day trek costs US$595, and the single supplement is US$2950.

Learn more at Bestway Tours’ website at www.bestway.com or call toll-free from the US and Canada, 800-663-0844. Outside the US and Canada, call 604-264-7378.

First-Ever “Beatles Tour” to India “Bestway is delighted to offer the first-ever Beatles tour of India, which will provide enlightenment and inspiration to many travelers,” said Mahmood Poonja, chief explorer of Bestway Tours. “We are so fortunate that Paul Saltzman, who photographed and met the Beatles in India, and is himself a Beatles expert and renowned filmmaker and director, will lead the tour with his unique experiences, perceptions and joy of India, for all to explore the wonders of India.”

“Through our travels across incredible India, we will use The Beatles’ music, words and photographs to evoke the magic of both the country and the iconic group,” added Saltzman.
