Invitation to Yoga...
Get ready to cook! The earliest use of the word yoga was in a Vedic text from around 1500 BCE called the Rg Veda where it was used to mean to cook. And if you think about it, when we do yoga, that’s exactly what we are doing. Hatha Yoga is like combining ingredients, in various measures and turning on the heat and stirring – Now don’t mistake Anusara for other methods where the heat is always on high. Like all good cuisine, sometimes you want to simmer, sometimes sear, sometimes slow cook – it depends on what you want to make.
All about the ingredients You’ll learn how, when and how much of the right muscles to use in each pose. Sometimes you end up making the same dish over and over because you are not sure how to use other ingredients. We do the same thing with overuse of some muscles in our body. Yoga will teach you how to get good at using some muscles you’ve never used, so you can savor the full experience available to you.
All about the methods The Anusara Principles of Alignment will teach you that in order to get the best flavor. You have to brown the onions first, before adding other vegetables to create the fullest flavor. Putting things in a particular order matters in the body as much as in anything else in life.
All about menus Anusara teaches you how to create the individual meal you want, depending on your mood. In each class, students set their personal intention. We’ll all do the same poses, use the same ingredients, but if you are in the mood for steamed or stir fry, it’s up to you to choose how you use your breath. Sometimes you want to eat it raw.
Specialized workshops Every month we teach a variety of workshops in which we go deeply into one particular topic, sometimes therapeutic, sometimes purely creative, so that you can take you practice deeper.
You don’t ever have to learn how to cook, but you’re still going to eat. In the same way, you are going to go through life moving your body. Yoga is the opportunity to become adept, even masterful at something you’re already doing, moving your body. Yoga is about learning to move joyfully, artfully, creating and expressing yourself. What do you want to make? We won’t spoon feed you. At Yoga Montclair we teach you.
